I had a very pleasant conversation with Emma Stevenson about this vacancy. She literally ran through the job description as it was detailed on the website.

Additional questions I asked were regarding working over Christmas. I don't mind working Christmas day because I don't take part in the festivities. I'd honestly rather be earning money if I could.

I don't think that opportunity will arise but I'll certainly have an opportunity to work the other days which should attract a nice premium.

Training was my next big thing because the ads I have been seeing have been wanting all sorts of months and years of experience.

Glad to report, Calor being a leading brand, they take care of all of this.

I dare say their training is top tier and they expect a lot.

This is a safety critical role; a lot can go wrong.

So in order to ensure everything goes right, there will be strict adherence to rules, no cutting of corners, and a pleasant speedy efficient service for every customer.

The 4 on 4 off is not a big deal. What would have been a big deal is being asked to do nights out but this seems not to be a thing.

The company offers a supportive onboarding process which is exactly what I need.

I don't mind that I'll pretty much be on the same wage I have been on doig moffett work.

Emma said the role could see me working up to 60 hours per week.

If that's based on 4 on 4 off then I could be working 15 hours days.

I'm not sure how I feel about this, but since it is only 4 days on with a decent 4 day recoup, it might be something I can easily adapt to.

Of course, my main motivation is cash.

My basic M-F will gross £698.46 (£16.63 x 42).

TFSS or FSSM or SSMT would be £872.97 (£16.63 x 21) + (£24.94 x 21)

But if I end up doing 60 hours then this £997.80 basic and £1,247.10.

It's not terrible and when I get into a job I like doing, 15 hour days will seem like nothing.

I already know how to deal with people and I have experience navigating country lanes

I think I have what it takes to be an ambassador for the brand.

There is a possibility that if I do great there might be a permanent offer at the end.

This would be good

21 weeks at £698.64 is £14,671.44 gross

£11,003.58 net

I am calculating my commitment to investing and topping up my pension - that's all that matters right now

21 weeks of £350 is £7,350

This leaves me with £3,653 assuming I do zero overtime

So overtime at every opportunity is in my best interest

I am going to be a "yes man"

I am really excited to work for a recognised brand.

I really hope this company do not cut corners, safety is their top priority, they look after their fleet and drivers, the benefits are very good, their reporting systems and easy to use, the customers are not too tricky, PPE is plentiful, the team is amazing, I get what I need out of the company, my stay is pleasant.

These things are important

Once this short 6 months appointment ends there is a chance to become hired full time.

I think, after asking Tracy at CRH the cost of doing a Class 1 refresher (£75/hr) I should be thinking about spending a day with them, doing couple/uncouple, reverse, and some driving plus the walk around check. £450 for 6 hours is not a tall ask and it should boost my confidence to jump on some RDC / D2D trunking.

That would be my medium term plan.

Do 6-12 months trunking to get some Class 1 experience then take that with my limited ADR exposure and try to break into Class 1 ADR where the bigger bucks are.

Either that or do 6 months Class 1 after 6 months of ADR, and if the opportunity comes up again to run ADR gas tanks I should do it for a further 6 months which would bring my total to a year, then once again revert to Class 1 trunking so that I can accrue 1 year of each.

This might put me in a better position to get on Class 1 tankers.

2 years isn't that long to spend trying to reach 52K/pa from where I am 36.4 or something

And there is every chance, Calor could help me more than I realise. I think it would be wise to be transparent about this in the interview. There is a possibility that the boss knows people who can shoehorn me into the role I want earning the wage I desire.

is not actual financial advice.
